Historic Race Cars from MG Motorsport
Doug Smith’s MG Motorsport has always been known for quality rebuilds as well as their support and development of components for the MGC models. Back in 2004 Doug’s son Tom was just getting established in historic racing and now he has 107 wins to his credit 100 of them behind the wheel of one of their own historic race cars, an MGB registered 297 EFU. The walls of the timber framed workshops are adorned with Tom’s victory garlands and the office has a cabinet full of trophies which have overflowed onto the shelves. Success in historic racing has even further enhanced MG Motosport’s already well established reputation for building historic race MGs.
Doug’s approach is to build every part of the car in his workshops to the highest possible standard. It begins with the acquisition of an eligible early MGB which is then stripped and totally rebuilt, it can take 2 to 3 months to thoroughly refurbish and prepare the shell, corroded panels are replaced before fitting the full competition specification roll cage, new wings, alloy bonnet, boot lid and a works hardtop. Power is supplied from a hand built 1840cc endurance race/rally engine, driving through a close ratio gearbox via a limited slip differential. The complete specification is too complex to list in full and in many respects, they are built to the customer’s requirements albeit in compliance with all the necessary race regulations.
The market for these specialist race cars has gradually evolved and despite the increase in costs historic racing has grown in popularity particularly the Equipe GTS series which gives the opportunity to participate a unique style of competition defined by its exceptional camaraderie along with an active social scene.
